Out on the gulf

The lagoon everyone comes for.

Forty-two islands of limestone and jungle, a hidden emerald lake you climb to on wooden steps, and water clear enough to see the bottom from the deck. Ang Thong is the day people plan a whole Samui trip around. The only real choice is big cruiser or small speedboat.

Ears and trunks

A morning with the elephants.

No riding and no circus tricks, just feeding, mud baths and watching rescued elephants roam a jungle valley. The sanctuaries that got it right keep the groups small, so it is worth choosing carefully.

Off the paved road

The island has a wild side.

Behind the beach resorts the interior climbs fast into jungle only four wheels can reach. Jeep safaris to the hidden waterfalls, quad bikes through the mud, ziplines strung above Lamai: the messy, grinning half of Samui.

On the hill

The Big Buddha and the old island.

Twelve golden metres of seated Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, the fishing village and Sunday walking street at Bophut, the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks the locals grin about. A guided island loop ties the temples, the viewpoints and a proper Thai lunch into one easy day.

Where to go

The gulf, island by island.

Samui is the base; the good days are all around it. Ang Thong for the lagoon. Koh Tao for the reef. Pig Island for the beach. The interior for the mud and the mountain views.

What to do

Know what you are after?

Twelve ways to spend a day on Samui: pick the one that sounds like your kind of time and every option behind it is already reviewed and priced.

Off the island

Out by speedboat, back by dinner.

The gulf is dotted with islands a short crossing away. Marine parks, dive sites, snorkel bays and a full-moon neighbour, most of them a morning out and an afternoon back, with the boat seat part of the ticket.
